He was born Ian Fraser Kilmister, but the entire civilized world knows the front man of Motörhead simply as Lemmy.
The long-revered heavy metal icon is also—if we’re to believe the subtitle of a documentary released last year about the bassist—49% Motherf@cker, 51% Son-of-a-Bitch.
Like so many others of his time, Lemmy was inspired to pursue music by the Beatles—whom he saw perform live at the Cavern Club at age sixteen. After dabbling in various feel-good bands in the swirling mid-sixties, the mutton-chopped rocker signed on as roadie for Jimi Hendrix and The Nice. He couldn’t have wanted for a better internship.
Originally a six-stringer, Lemmy switched to bass for a prolonged stint with space rockers Hawkwind. That eclectic group’s experimental, drug-fueled aesthetic helped shape the musician’s skills, but his take-no-shit personality didn’t mesh well with the acid freaks in the band. Hawkwind relieved him of duty in ’75 after an untimely mid-tour drug bust left Lemmy stranded at the Canadian border.
Undeterred, Lemmy founded his own group with guitarist “Fast” Eddie Clarke and drummer “Philthy” Phill Taylor. Blurring the boundaries of hard rock, metal, and punk, Motörhead forged a unique, pile-driving, earsplitting sound at a time when disco ruled the airwaves. Tracks from Overkill, Bomber and Ace of Spades are now considered classics and remain in the band’s live set to this day.
Motörhead is still releasing new music. They’re also still touring. And they’ll be at Blossom Music Center on July 25th when Rockstar Energy Drink’s Mayhem Festival slams into Ohio. Also appearing will be Anthrax, Slayer, and Slipknot.
Lemmy participated in a short Q & A before the tour to give folks an idea of where his mind’s at these days.
